RSK Weighs In on Proposed Changes to High School Transition Planning

Raising Special Kids’ Executive Director Christopher Tiffany recently submitted a letter of support for a proposed rule that would improve transition services for students with disabilities in Arizona. The rule aims to lower the age at which transition planning begins and requires schools to provide a year’s notice before a student with disabilities graduates.

The proposed changes are designed to ensure that students with disabilities have ample time and support to prepare for life after high school, whether in post-secondary education, employment, or independent living. “This rule is a vital step in ensuring that students receive the individualized planning and resources they need to succeed after graduation,” noted Tiffany in the letter.

The proposal aligns with federal guidelines under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), which stresses the importance of early transition planning.

If this issue is important to your family, Raising Special Kids encourages families to reach out to the Arizona State Board of Education to share their thoughts. Your voice can help shape the future of transition services in Arizona.

The deadline to submit a written comment and/or to register for a verbal public comment is Thursday, September 19, 2024 at noon.
